The viola is a member of the string family.

Compared to the violin, it is a little larger in size but still rests on the players shoulder and is held in place with a chin rest.

It's 4 strings (C, G, D and A) sound deeper than a violin, they can be plucked or bowed. The bow of a viola is longer and slightly heavier than the bow of a violin.
